WHAT SMART PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT TODAY ๐
#1 - YouTube Shorts to Share the Wealth: Creators to Get a Slice of the Ad Revenue Pie Starting February 1st
Ladies and gentlemen, hold onto your jorts because YouTube is about to make some big changes to the way we make money on the platform. Starting February 1st, creators will be able to earn a piece of the pie from ads viewed between videos in the Shorts feed. But before you start planning that yacht trip, keep in mind, there are some stipulations.
To qualify for this new revenue-sharing model, you need to have at least 1,000 subscribers and 10 million Shorts views within 90 days. Easy right?
But before you jump on board, be prepared, because YouTube's new revenue-sharing system is a bit of a labyrinth, thanks to music licensing. Each month, ad revenue from the Shorts feed will be combined and used to pay creators and cover music licensing costs. And before you ask, no, uploading Shorts without music won't help you keep more of the revenue for yourself, you'll still get your fair share.
In any case, YouTube Shorts is about to become the new King of the Hill in the short-form video space and ready to give TikTok a run for its money. With creators now able to earn more from YouTube, it's time to start creating original content and getting a slice of that ad revenue pie.
#2 - Instagram puts the focus back on content creation, sends Shop tab packing
We've got some big news coming out of Instagram today โ the platform is streamlining its navigation and returning to its roots! As of February, Instagram will be bringing the Compose button (you know, that little plus sign " + ") back to the front and center of the bottom navigation bar. But that's not all โ they're also getting rid of the Shop tab entirely.
This move comes after a wave of user frustration with Instagram's recent changes, which pushed various products like Instagram Shop and Reels at the expense of the overall user experience. Even high-profile influencers like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner added their voices to the complaints, with Kylie even posting an image on her Instagram asking the company to "make Instagram Instagram again."
But don't worry, shopping on Instagram isn't going away completely. The company has reassured users that "you will still be able to set up and run your shop on Instagram as we continue to invest in shopping experiences that provide the most value for people and businesses across Feed, Stories, Reels, ads, and more."
And with the Compose button back in its rightful place, Instagram is encouraging its users to return to what the platform was built for โ posting and sharing photos. So, get ready to start snapping and sharing those memories.
