Wow, what a year it's been for the advertising industry! From the digital ad crash to Elon Musk buying Twitter (just kidding, to those out there pretending it never happened), 2022 has certainly been a rollercoaster ride. And unfortunately, it looks like the ride isn't over yet - experts are predicting a spending downturn that will last well into 2023.
And let's not forget about poor old YouTube, which had its first-ever year-over-year decline and was left feeling like it was spinning its wheels. But hey, at least Netflix finally decided to jump on the ad bandwagon and join the rest of the streaming companies in trying to squeeze every last dollar out of their subscribers. π€·ββοΈ
But it hasn't been all rainclouds and bad news. The ad game is getting a whole lot more crowded with an outburst of new ad sellers on the block. Retail giants like Best Buy and Uber have jumped into the ad business with both feet, creating a new category called retail media that's expected to be worth a whopping $160 billion by 2027.
Just beware, viewers, because with all these streaming options bombarding you with ads, you might start feeling like you're trapped in a never-ending commercial break. Hang in there folks, 2023 is just around the corner (fingers crossed).
