WHAT SMART PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT TODAY 👀

#1 - Google's quest for cookie-less ads fails, forced to start over

Looks like Google's plan to replace those pesky (delightful if you're a marketer) third-party cookies with shiny new tech just hit a major roadblock.

A group from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) said no to Google's plan, saying it would not keep users' privacy safe. They do not want to see the plan move forward.

The online ad industry has a deadline in 2024 when Google will stop using third-party cookies on Chrome. Third-party cookies are small files that advertisers use to track people online and show them ads. Since 2020, Google has been working on new ways to show targeted ads on the web that keep users' privacy safe. One plan is called Topics API. This plan lets advertisers show ads to website visitors based on things they have looked at before, like "fitness" or "books," but without revealing who the user is.

But Google might have to start over with their plan. Because a group from the World Wide Web Consortium, known as the Technical Architecture Group (TAG), told Google not to use their current plan. For them, the plan doesn't give users enough control over what information is shared and that other companies can use the information to make profiles of users.

Google said they disagree with the group and they plan to move forward with Topics API and try to figure out a resolution that works for everybody. But this is just the latest problem in Google's plan to stop using third-party cookies. The deadline to stop using these cookies has already been delayed twice. But other web browsers, like Safari and Firefox, already block third-party cookies for privacy reasons so the pressure is on.

So it looks like Google has some work to do. But let's be real, we all knew cookies were too good to be true. They may be delicious in a chocolate chip form, but on the web, they're nothing but trouble.

# - Twitter offers sweet deal to companies: matching funds up to $250,000

Twitter is trying to get more companies to advertise on its platform by offering a special deal. They will match the money that companies spend on ads, up to $250,000. This means that companies will get $500,000 worth of ads to play with. But, they have to use all the money by the end of February. Talk about a time-sensitive offer...

This special deal could be used to buy ads that run during the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is a big day for Twitter because a lot of companies advertise during the game. In the past, many companies have advertised on Twitter during the Super Bowl to get people talking about their ads. Think of it like a Twitter Superbowl commercial party!

Twitter needs to get more companies to advertise on its platform because a lot of companies have stopped spending money on ads since Elon Musk took over the company. Musk said that Twitter had lost a lot of money and was losing $4 million a day. Many big companies like Pfizer, United Airlines, General Motors, and Volkswagen have stopped advertising on Twitter.

To be eligible for this special deal, companies must use certain Twitter products, like a new tool that helps companies avoid having their ads show up next to tweets with certain words. So don't worry, if you were afraid your brand's ads would show side by side next to the Trumps and Tates of the world you can be safe in knowing that's not gonna happen.

To sum it up, Twitter is doing everything it can to get more companies to advertise on its platform and to make more money. Elon Musk thinks that Twitter will be making enough money to pay its bills by 2023. So, Twitter is trying to play catch up before it's too late!
